LaserSeries Pro Sump Kit - Base Kit

LaserSeries Pro Sump Kit - Base Kit

This is our LaserSeries Sump/Refugium Pro baffle kit for Aqueon® or Imagitarium™ glass tanks with adjustable water depth.

Tank and Filter Socks Not Included
Our LaserSeries Sump Kits are our most affordable full featured sump kits.  They are made from the same quality materials as our pre-assembled EzBuild kits but they are delivered to you as laser cut keyed parts which you assemble yourself.  Don't worry, unlike our competitors, we include instructions to guide you through the process.  We offer these as our lowest cost option to build a fully functional 5 chamber sump from a standard Aqueon® or Imagitarium™ rimmed glass tank.  To keep costs down and shipping times quick, we only offer them with 1" PVC pipe passthrough inlet holes (we include caps to cover unused holes if you only need 1 or 2) with a full set of adjustable depth baffles. The sock baffle is designed so it can be assembled in either a left hand or right hand configuration.

All parts are test fitted prior to packaging to insure they go together quickly and easily.

Installation Notes:
Many producers of similar kits will state that you can assemble the kit with aquarium safe silicone, or 'Silicone for Plastics".  This is not true.  While aquarium safe silicone is used to install the baffles in the tank, it should never be used to bond the three pieces of the sock baffle together.  To bond the three panels of the sock baffle you will need to use an acrylic cement such as Sci-Grip Weld-On #3, #4 or #16.  While you technically could use silicone or "silicone for plastics" they are not designed to bond plastics together. The joints between the parts will fail causing major leaks or total collapse of your sock baffle.  Weld-On Cement is a specialty product and working with it can require special equipment and safety gear.  If you don't want to tackle that then please take a look at our EzBuild kits. They are functionally the same kit with all the sock baffle bonding work done for you here in the shop. Since those kits are CNC machined they also have some nice finishing touches like beveled edges on many parts and available o-ring sealed inlets which aren't possible with laser cutting.

NOTE:  This is designed specifically for Aqueon® or Imagitarium™ 20 gallon long glass aquariums.  If your tank is not an  Aqueon® or Imagitarium™ or you don't know for sure, please contact us prior to ordering with your tank inside dimensions.  To measure the inside, use calipers or trim a dowel rod or rigid piece of cardboard until it fits between the front and back glass of the tank while parallel to the bottom.  Message us with that length and we can confirm if it will fit.

Custom kits made to your specifications are also available.  No project is too big or too small.  Please contact us for a quote.

Size of your tank:

Our kits are designed to fit in a tank you already own.  This is the size of the tank you plan to install the baffles into to make you sump or refugium.

Chambers:

Our kits are designed to create distinct chambers in the sump.  Most tanks have the option of 4 or 5 chambers.  Some of the smaller tanks are size constrained to 4 chambers.  Typically, those chambers can be described as follows:

4 Chamber

  1. Mechanical filtration (Filter socks, etc.)
  2. Equipment/refugium
  3. Bubble trap/chemical filtration
  4. Return

5 Chamber

  1. Mechanical filtration (Filter socks, etc.)
  2. Refugium
  3. Equipment
  4. Bubble trap/chemical filtration
  5. Return
Brand of your tank:

Our kits are designed to fit in a tank you already own.  We currently make kits to fit Aqueon and Imagitarium brand tanks.  These tanks will differ in physical dimensions even if they are the same capacity.  An Aqueon 20L has different dimensions than an Imagitarium 20L so the kits for each tank are not compatible with the other.  If you don't know which tank you have, or if you have another brand, please contact us and we can work with you to get the kit you need.

Baffle Height:

The baffle height is how tall the baffles after the sock baffle are in the tank.  This height will set the maximum water depth in the sump when the return pump is running.  Depending on the kit the options will include 8", 10" or 12" tall baffles.  These will allow adjustable water level depths as follows:

8" - Adjustable from 5.5" - 8"
10" - Adjustable from 6.25" - 10"
12" - Adjustable from 7.5" - 12"

If your setup requires different depths please contact us for assistance.  Custom options are available.

Choosing the best depth will depend on your specific situation.  Some things to consider are:

  1. Will you be using any equipment which requires a specific water depth?  The most common equipment with specific depth requirements are protein skimmers.  If you plan to use a skimmer with a 9" water depth requirement then you will need to select baffles which are taller than that (10" or 12").
  2. Will the baffle height you choose allow enough extra space to retain all the water that drains down from the display tank when your return pump shuts off?  This is a critical consideration to prevent sump overflows.
Media Stand Width:

The media stands go between the water level weir baffle and the bubble trap baffle.  They are included with the kit but are optional to install.  They are there to support bagged media above the bottom of the tank so water can flow through it and pass under the bubble trap baffle.  The wider the stands, the further apart the two baffles will sit and the more space that section will consume.  Keep in mind that the baffles are 1/4" thick and the weir plate and heads on the thumbscrews also protrude out into the adjoining chambers.  These items add an additional 1" to the total foot print of the bubble trap section.
